- Graph theory. The study of how things are connected and what those connections imply.
- Graph. A set of nodes, which are the objects to connect, and a set of edges or connectors.
- The internet in late 1970 (ARPANET) was made of 13 nodes architected basically as two rings:
- East coast: MIT, Harvard, Case Western, Carnegie Tech, BBN and Lincoln Labs.
- West coast: Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, Utah, SRI, SDC, and RAND.
- Path. Sequence of nodes linked by an edge.
- Connection. A path between a pair of nodes.
- Length. Number of edges a path contains. The number of hops that you take in the network.
- Distance. The shortest path between a pair of nodes.
- Connected component is a set of nodes:
- Internally connected,
- No edges to other components.
