The Engage Rule

Rian Doris. Steven Kotler.

Execution: Procrastination.

Procrastination. Often high motivation + inaction.

3 types of procrastination.

  1. Inertia. Prevents you from starting work.
  2. Distractibility. Diverts your focus.
  3. Chronic delay. Perpetually postpones and prevents progress.
Approach-Avoidance Conflict.

Flow Cycle:

  1. Engage. Starting to struggle. Hardest part.
  2. Struggle.
  3. Release.
  4. Flow.
  5. Recovery.

Triggers:

  1. Clear goals. Focus on the target. Break the task in microscopic goals. Wildly specific goals. So thinny, so easy.
  2. Challenge-Skills balance.
    1. Challenge skill regulator #1. Lower the hurdle. Less effort to engage.
    2. Challenge skill regulator #2. Regulate time.
    3. Challenge skill regulator #3. Define the scope.
  3. Bypassing. Response-Inhibition.
  4. Flow payoff.
  5. Procrastination is natural but optional.
