The 10 Principles of Burning Man

Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey wrote the 10 Principles in 2004 as guidelines for the newly-formed Regional Network. They were crafted not as a dictate of how people should be and act, but as a reflection of the community’s ethos and culture as it had organically developed since the event’s inception.

  1. Radical InclusionAnyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.
  2. Gifting. Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.
  3. Decommodification. In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.
  4. Radical Self-reliance. Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources.
  5. Radical Self-expression. Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.
  6. Communal Effort. Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.
  7. Civic Responsibility. We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
  8. Leaving No Trace. Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.
  9. Participation. Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.
  10. Immediacy. Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

Three Laws of Robotics

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

In "The Evitable Conflict" the machines generalize the First Law to mean:

  • No machine may harm humanity; or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.

This was refined in the end of Foundation and Earth, a zeroth law was introduced, with the original three suitably rewritten as subordinate to it:

  • A robot may not injure humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.

Decálogo Judicial

Ignacio Burgoa Orihuela.

Out of your box

Anthony Bourdain said: “Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o’clock in a mostly empty bar. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyway. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride.”

Nobel disease

  • Nobel disease or Nobelitis is an informal term for the embrace of strange or scientifically unsound ideas by some Nobel Prize winners, usually later in life.
  • It has been argued that the effect results, in part, from a tendency for Nobel winners to feel empowered by the award to speak on topics outside their specific area of expertise, although it is unknown whether Nobel Prize winners are more prone to this tendency than other individuals.
  • Paul Nurse, co-winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, warned later laureates against "believing you are expert in almost everything, and being prepared to express opinions about most issues with great confidence, sheltering behind the authority that the Nobel Prize can give you".

Sesgo de confirmación

  3. Proceso no intencional. Ubicuo.

  1. No te apaniques.

Lead like a Rolling Stone

On the eve of their first North American tour in four years, a tour projected to make 100s of millions in revenue for the band, the Stones abruptly announced they were postponing the tour. It wasn’t long before rumors began to spread, it was Jagger’s health. Within days, the official announcement was given. Jagger, age 75, was to undergo a heart valve replacement. Fans around the world were on pins and needles waiting for word. Soon, a picture of Mick walking in the garden a few days post-op appeared. Then the rescheduling of the tour was announced. But the world wondered, on stage, in front of thousands, for hours on end, could he still move like Jagger? Finally, opening night. Chicago. 61,000 fans. Jagger didn’t wait long, shortly into their first number, he pranced the stage and the runway. You could almost see the sense of relief on the faces of the Stones. Charlie’s grin said it all: “He’s OK, we are OK.”

When the tour was postponed, Jagger himself took to Facebook to apologize to fans: “I’m so sorry to all our fans in America. I really hate letting you down like this. I’m devastated for having to postpone the tour but I will be working very hard to be back on stage as soon as I can. Once again, huge apologies to everyone.”

Here there are some lessons in leadership we can take from the Rolling Stones front-man:

  1. Resiliency: The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. No better example of resiliency than a 75 year-old performing like a 30 year-old 3 months post-op. As leaders, we must be resilient. Our teams are watching us. We have to lead through the successes and setbacks. How we react will serve as a model for our followers. It’s not about ignoring adversity and hoping it goes away. It is about acknowledging it and attacking it head on.
  2. Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Just re-read his post made shortly after the postponement. I’m so sorry… hate letting you down… devastated. He understood our feelings, he made us feel like he was sharing tem. For a leader, empathy is a critical skill. Those around us want to know that we feel what they feel, that we understand the challenges they face, that we are in those challenges with them, side-by-side.
  3. Communication: Ready to talk or impart information. Jagger and his team took us through the journey. The announcement, the apology, and the progress. They shared the why, the plan, the process, and the outcome. The old adage “Communicate early and often” is truer today than ever before. It builds trust. It creates confidence. It develops understanding. Communication is not a one and done. Leaders who master the art of effective communication will be able to lead their followers through adversity.
  4. Committment: Feeling dedication and loyalty to a cause; wholeheartedly dedicated. The Stones could have cancelled the tour altogether. Jagger could have said I’m done. It’s not worth it. After all, they’ve been doing it for over 50 years. They showed commitment and dedication to their craft, to their love of music and to their fans. Commitment to the vision and to the mission, is vital. If we move on no matter what, our teams will follow.

There it is. Stick with him. Move like Jagger!

What Makes a Great Leader?

Linda A. Hill

When organizations can’t innovate, it’s because they don’t have the right leadership.

  • From setting direction and strategy to vision to shaping culture and capabilities.
  • The new ABCs of leadership: Architect, Bridger, and Catalyst
    • A: Architect: Build your company’s culture and capabilities for innovation. How to experiment to learn together. Unleash, leverage and harness talents for the collective good.
    • B: Bridger: Forge partnerships outside your organization. Forge partnerships outside your organization.
    • C: Catalyst: Accelerate co-creation across the entire ecosystem.
  • Real-world example: Pfizer turns vendors into partners.
  • These roles require new ways of thinking about power. Let go of formal authority. Mutual trust, mutual influence, mutual commitment.
You cannot tell people to innovate, you can only invite them to. Its a voluntary act.
