Three Principles of Self-Defense

B130936.

Necessity. Exists when a “hostile act” occurs or a force exhibits “hostile intent”.

  • Hostile Act. An attack or other use of force against you.
  • Hostile Intent. The threat of imminent use of force against you or impede your mission and/or duties.

De-escalate
  • When time and circumstances permit.
  • Warn and give opportunity to withdraw.

Proportionality. Force used should be sufficient to respond decisively to the hostile act or demonstrated hostile intent and ensure your continued safety or other protected persons or property.

  • Force used to counter a hostile act, or demonstrated hostile intent must be reasonable in nature, duration, and scope to the perceived or demonstrated threat based on all facts known at the time.
  • Force used may exceed the means and intensity of the hostile act or hostile intent.
